How to Choose a Comforting Pet Robot for Living Alone

Why Robot Pets Suit People Who Live Alone

Living alone, you can gain “the feeling that someone is waiting when you come home” and “the reassurance of having someone to talk to,” but your home tends to sit empty for long stretches. Robot pets need no care while you are out, making them a good match for the lifestyle of people who live alone and go out often.

Choose by Conversation and Companionship Features

Among people living alone, the most popular feature is conversation — “it responds when you talk to it.” If you want natural small talk in Japanese, Japanese-made models have the edge.

• Romi (Mixi): specialized in Japanese conversation, with natural small talk and responses
• aibo (Sony): rich emotional expression lets you enjoy building a long-term relationship
• RoBoHoN (Sharp): a palm-sized conversation robot you can carry with you

Choose by Space Savings

Rooms for people living alone are often limited in space, so a small footprint is also an important criterion. Ultra-compact models that fit on a desk or shelf (Eilik, Vector 2.0, EMO) are easy to place even in a studio apartment.

Choose by Cost (With or Without a Monthly Fee)

Household budgets tend to be tight when living alone, so be sure to check in advance whether there is a monthly fee. If you want to start with no monthly fee, Eilik (¥25,990) is a typical choice; if you prioritize conversation quality and don’t mind a monthly fee, Romi (¥1,958/month) is a typical choice.

Summary: Priorities When Choosing for Solo Living

Checking in the order of (1) whether there is a conversation feature and its quality, (2) installation space, and (3) monthly fees makes it easier to narrow down the one that fits your lifestyle. If a conversation partner matters most, consider Romi; if you want an easy start, we recommend beginning with Eilik.
