Bottom line

Companion robot device prices fall into three ranges: "touch-and-respond" robots under ¥30,000, "talking and expressive" robots from ¥30,000 to ¥100,000, and "roaming and growing" robots at ¥100,000 and up.

Based on official prices as of October 12, 2026, there is roughly a 60-fold gap between the most affordable model, Mia (¥9,800), and LOVOT 3.0 (from ¥577,500). Many models also charge a monthly fee, so check whether a monthly fee is required as well.

Line up the device prices of 16 models and they split into "three price ranges"

We listed the device prices of 16 models sold on official stores in Japan, from most to least expensive. The colors indicate the price range. Where a model comes in several versions, we show the main one.

* Device prices shown on each manufacturer's official store or official website (tax incl., checked October 12, 2026). aibo is shown as discontinued on its official store, so the last listed price is used. LOOI is on sale on its official store (¥37,800), so its regular price is shown. Monthly fees, shipping and options are not included.

Editors
The chart shows thatLOVOT alone is in a different league, by a whole digit. On the other hand, there are five or more options under ¥30,000, soeven people who "just want to try one casually" have optionswith today's companion robots.

How "what they can do" differs by price range

The price difference translates directly into a difference in "what they can do." Based on the features listed on official websites, we summarized the characteristics of each price range.

Under ¥30,000Touch & respond

These focus onreactions when you touch them, such as wagging a tail, making sounds or changing expressions when petted. Most are compact enough to fit anywhere, and almost all can be used without a monthly fee.

¥30,000–¥100,000Talking & expressive

Spoken conversation, plus rich expressions and gestures, are added in this range. Models that process conversation with cloud AI oftenrequire a monthly plan.

¥100,000 and upRoaming & growing

These models mainlymove around on their own around the room, remember family members' faces anddevelop their own personality. They also come with more thoroughcare programs, such as repairs and regular checkups.

Editors
Pricier models can do more, buthow soothing a robot is isn't necessarily proportional to its price. If you just want to be soothed by petting, a model under ¥30,000 may be more than satisfying.

Is the device price enough? "Costs beyond the device" to check before buying

A charging cable, a small box, coins and a small robot figurine on a desk

When planning your budget, check whether the following four costs apply in addition to the device price.

Monthly and annual plans

Poketomo, NICOBO, Romi, RoBoHoN, KATA Friends, aibo and LOVOT assume you subscribe to a plan to keep using them. We compare the difference with higher-tier plans in How much do premium monthly plans cost?

Sets with charging stands, etc.

Poketomo starts at ¥42,900 for the set with a charging holder. Check whether you're looking at the device-only price or the set price.

Shipping and fees

The ¥577,500 price of LOVOT 3.0 includes a ¥14,300 administrative fee and ¥3,300 shipping. On the other hand, some stores charge shipping separately.

Repairs and care

Repairs after the warranty period are generally paid. We explain warranties and typical repair costs in The reality of breakdown and repair support.

Editors
Even if the device is cheap, paying a monthly fee can make it cost more within 3 years.3-year total cost estimates are available in the chart inModels that require a monthly fee vs. models that don't.

For overseas models priced in dollars, think "listed price plus extra"

Some popular overseas models have no official price in Japanese yen, and their official stores list prices in dollars.

EMOUS$279〜"EMO GO HOME" with charging dock is US$369

Dollar-priced models may involveexchange rates, as well as separateshipping, customs duties and consumption tax. Also, to use devices with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in Japan, you generally needthe Japan radio certification (Giteki) mark. Before buying, also check who bears the cost if you have to send it back overseas for warranty service or repairs.

* As shown on each manufacturer's official store (checked October 12, 2026). Since there is no official yen price, these models are not included in the chart above.

How to set a budget | 3 questions when you can't decide on a price range

A woman smiling at a small robot by the window, with a notebook
Under ¥30,000
"I mainly want to be soothed by petting it"

If you enjoy touch-based reactions more than conversation, this price range is enough. It's also reassuring that many models here can be started without a monthly fee.

¥30,000–¥100,000
"I want to talk to it and get a reply"

If you want to enjoy conversation, start from this price range. Include the monthly plan fee in your budget and compare the cost per year.

¥100,000+
"I want it to live with us for a long time as part of the family"

If you want a model that moves around on its own and develops its personality, this is the price range. Think long term, including repair and care plans.

!
Some models had or will have price increases in October

mirumi's price was revised to ¥22,000 (tax incl.) at 10:00 on October 1, 2026. LOVOT 3.0 has officially announced a revision to from ¥599,500 starting October 26. LOVOT is planned to be from ¥649,000 from mid-January 2027.

Editors
If you're unsure, try writing down in one phrase"what you're looking forward to most". Once that's clear, the right price range naturally narrows down.

Q

FAQ

What is the typical price range for companion robots?
Based on official prices as of October 12, 2026, device prices for the main models available in Japan range widely, from about ¥10,000 to about ¥580,000. They fall into three price ranges: touch-and-respond robots under ¥30,000, talking and expressive robots from ¥30,000 to ¥100,000, and roaming and growing robots at ¥100,000 and up.
Which companion robot is the cheapest?
Of the 16 models compared, Mia (White ¥9,800) is the most affordable. Next, Petit Qoobo (¥14,300), Qoobo (¥17,600), Fuzozo (¥19,800) and mirumi (¥22,000; raised from ¥19,800 on October 1) can be bought for under ¥30,000.
Are there costs other than the device price?
Depending on the model, there may be monthly or annual plan fees, sets with charging stands, shipping and administrative fees, and repair costs after the warranty period. Poketomo, NICOBO, Romi, RoBoHoN, KATA Friends, aibo and LOVOT assume you subscribe to a plan to keep using them.
What's the difference between expensive and cheap robots?
The main differences are whether they can hold spoken conversations, move around on their own, remember family members' faces and develop a personality, and whether they come with care programs such as repairs and checkups. If your goal is to be soothed by petting, even models under ¥30,000 can be plenty of fun.
