What you'll learn in this article

  • When you think it might be broken: what to try first (how to restart each model)
  • Manufacturer warranties run 30 days to 1 year: each model's warranty periods and start dates
  • Repairs: how to request them and shipping costs (domestic or overseas support)
  • After the warranty expires: typical repair and battery replacement costs
  • Overseas and used products: cases where the warranty doesn't apply
Bottom line

Manufacturer warranties for companion robots vary widely by model, from 30 days to 1 year. aibo and LOVOT, which have short warranties, rely on paid care plans that cover repair costs.

Repair costs after the warranty expires range from ¥6,000 per repair for Fuzozo to about ¥180,000 for LOVOT. Before buying, also check whether there is a repair contact in Japan, who pays for shipping, and whether the warranty still applies if you buy used or overseas.

Think it might be broken? 3 things to try first

A hand plugging a charging cable into a small robot on a desk

Even if it seems “not moving” or “not responding,” it may not actually be broken. Before requesting a repair, try these three things.

① Charging and power

A dead battery or poor contact with the charging dock is a surprisingly common cause. Check the orientation and connection of the cable and adapter.

② Restart using the official method

Turn the power off by holding the power button, then turn it back on. The hold time differs by model, so check the table below.

③ Wi-Fi and the app

Some models only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (such as KATA Friends and Fuzozo). Also keep the app and the robot's software up to date.

ModelOfficially documented way to power off / restart
aiboPress the button on the back of the neck for about 2 seconds to power off, then press it again to power on. Holding it for 10+ seconds forces a shutdown (support the robot, as it will fall over)
LOVOTHold the nose switch for 3 seconds to power off. Holding for 10+ seconds forces a shutdown, which puts strain on the robot
RoBoHoNHolding the power button for 8+ seconds forces the power off (data may be lost)
PoketomoHold the button at the base of the tail for about 5 seconds to power off; hold again for about 5 seconds to start (takes about 1 minute)
MoflinCheck the battery level and deep-sleep mode, then hold the power button for 5+ seconds to turn it off and turn it back on
BOCCO emoHold the power button for 10 seconds to force a restart. The app also has a diagnostic mode
FuzozoHold the back button for 2 seconds to power on/off. If anything seems wrong after a drop, stop using and charging it
LoonaTurn it off and on with a 3-second press of the power button, twice. You can send error logs via “Loona Problem Diagnosis” in the app
QooboCharge it first, then push the power switch until it clicks. If the LED blinks rapidly, contact the customer support office

If it still doesn't work, record when it started, in what situations, and what the symptoms are, along with photos or videos, before contacting support so things go smoothly. Forced shutdowns and resets may erase data, so read the official instructions carefully before doing them.

Manufacturer warranties run 30 days to 1 year, and “when the clock starts” differs too

An open box, a blank card, a pen and a small robot figurine on a desk

Here are the manufacturer warranty periods during which repairs are free. The start date (purchase date, delivery date, initial setup date, etc.) also differs by model.

※ Based on each manufacturer's warranty terms and official website (checked October 12, 2026). For KATA Friends, the warranty becomes 1 year with the Anshin Plan or the one-time purchase plan. For Fuzozo, if purchased through Makuake or similar, the period counts from the arrival date. lopeto (1 year) and Loona (1 year under the manufacturer's terms) may have different conditions depending on where you buy in Japan.

!
For models with short warranties, consider a “care plan” as part of the package

aibo and LOVOT have a 30-day manufacturer warranty. Instead, aibo offers the optional aibo Care Support (repairs and inspections at half price), and LOVOT's monthly plans include treatment coverage (1/3 to the full cost of treatment), to help cover repair costs over long-term use.

Where to buy the main models

Editorial Team
The warranty may start not from the purchase date but from the “delivery date” (NICOBO) or the “date initial setup is completed” (Romi). It's a good idea to note the date it arrived and the date you completed initial setup.

How to request repairs and shipping costs | Domestic or overseas support

※ Tax incl. Based on each manufacturer's official website and repair terms (checked October 12, 2026).

Editorial Team
Many Japanese manufacturers use pickup services or shipping kits, so there's little hassle, while overseas manufacturers may involve email exchanges in English. Before buying, it's reassuring to check whether there is a support desk you can consult in Japanese.

Buying used, from unofficial sellers or overseas may void the warranty

A small robot and a houseplant on a shelf
⚠ Examples not covered by the warranty
  • KATA Friends: units bought through Amazon Outlet, Mercari or other secondhand channels are not covered
  • Under Loona's and lopeto's manufacturer terms, units bought from unauthorized sellers are not covered
  • lopeto's warranty is valid only within the country of purchase
✅ What to do when you buy
  • Keep proof of purchase such as receipts and order history
  • Keep the warranty card and the original box and cushioning (for aibo, this affects the shipping fee)
  • On marketplaces, check whether the seller is official

For many models, drops, water damage, disassembly and modification are not covered by the warranty. For RoBoHoN, decorations such as applying stickers are also treated as modifications and may result in paid repairs. For devices that use lithium-ion batteries, NITE (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation) also advises that if you notice anything unusual, such as swelling or abnormal heat, you should stop using the device immediately.
